Education

Greetings, my name is Sammie. I am a senior at the University of Miami (Florida!!) graduating in 2018. I am majoring in chemistry and physics with minors in psychology and math. I will be applying to PhD programs in chemistry this fall, but for the next year or so, my current location will be as follows: Months of July & August: Strongsville, OH. September, October, November, mid December: Miami, FL (University) Mid December - mid/end of January: Strongsville, OH. February-May: Miami.

Experience

Unlike a good chunk of the world, I truly love math and science and I believe my passion in these subjects are integral to my success as a tutor/teacher. I will put my full effort into finding the best study method for you, and building on it to strengthen your skills. For instance, some of my chem students found the best way of learning for them was to do loads of practicing problems, so I would make weekly problem sets personalized to concepts I knew they were having more difficulty in than others. For others who needed a more conceptual understanding, I'd make handouts to help, on top of a 15 credit course load. As a physics and chemistry major, I have taken (almost) any and all variations of those courses, from organic to physical to E&M. I can tutor in any type of either of those subjects as I have gotten A's and B's in all of my rigorous physics and chemistry courses. (Extra good if you're a UM student taking these courses - I am better at helping with a class I've already taken) Additionally, I have always been mathematically inclined, and use this to help others find clarity in math. I have taken all the basics - geometry, algebra, trig - standard college calculus 1&2 - however, I took calculus through BC in high school and tested out of these so I never technically took college calc 1&2 - as well as calc 3, linear algebra, and differential equations. Even if the course I am tutoring is one I haven't taken since middle school, I will quickly be able to pick up on it in a day or two whereas reviewing physical chemistry will definitely take longer. Furthermore, I also am a great source if you are looking to improve your math on standardized tests. I have experience with the ACT, SAT, GRE - I haven't taken any others, but I could probably do the GMAT as well as it is nearly identical to the GRE quant section. I can undoubtedly provide you with tricks and methods to improve time management and score higher. I also scored very highly on the ACT English test - the one that was grammar based/correct the sentence section, NOT the reading comp!!!!- and can definitely help with that as well. The ACT English is, as far as I know, the only test with a section of the sort. I also can assist with the SAT science portion. Adding to that, I perform very well when it comes writing, scoring an 10/12 ACT writing and a 5/6 GRE writing. I also have had some of my highest grades in classes involving heavy writing, such as philosophy and even my labs. I believe writing to be one of, if not the most important skill you can possess academically. I can help you learn to explain your thoughts and ideas in a way that is clear and understandable while avoiding wordiness; instead, elegant transition between sentences and ideas. Experience-wise, I tutor organic chemistry currently, and have tutored math on and off my whole life. I never have worked officially for a company or had a consistent, serious gig, although I am trying to become a certified tutor through my university. I teach subsets of a chemistry 2 class weekly for credit - roughly 15 students - since the class is comprised of around 200 people, I understand that it's nearly impossible to resist distraction. Teaching has been by far my one of my favorite experiences and I have received strong feedback for going above and beyond and clearing up some of the most complex parts of the course. I aim for my students to eschew from the opinion that chemistry is a daunting enough subject to discourage giving it a try.

Hobbies

I pride myself on being able to find some sort of common ground to connect over with just about anyone. While tutoring implies the need to be in strict work-mode, I like to try to lighten the mood and befriend those I am teaching as I believe the unequivocal #1 way to help someone learn is communication. If a person doesn't feel comfortable asking questions, then there will likely be little to no benefits from tutoring. You'll never learn if you don't ask questions!!!! When I'm not studying, I like to spend time with friends and family more than anything - I am very extroverted, so naturally I enjoy being around people, meeting new people, learning from others - even in labs. I come from a family of 8 so perhaps that explains my enjoyment in being around others. Additionally, I truly enjoy helping others succeed academically as well as bringing science to other people's lives. I ultimately would like to become a professor, albeit the high competition and selectivity. I also enjoy reading when I have the time - anything from memoirs to nonfiction science books to reading on personality theory. I also love love love music - I play the guitar but I'm undoubtedly very very rusty right now. I think that's sufficient (trying to get enough characters)
